The new EU regulations.

Efficiency and sustainability in the service of climate protection.

Green light for a climate-friendly future. At the end of 2019, the member states of the European Union decided to reduce energy consumption by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. To achieve this goal, two new EU regulations govern the ecodesign (SLR) and the energy consumption labeling (ELR) of light sources.

The new eco-design regulation: energy efficiency rethought.

With the introduction of the new Ecode Design Regulation 2019/2020 (Single Lighting Regulation), the requirements for light sources and separate control gear have been defined. Henceforth, there will be a distinction between light sources and surrounding products. New requirements for the function and energy efficiency should contribute to resource conservation.

Light source

According to the new regulation, headlamps at STEINEL are defined as light sources.

Surrounding product

In accordance with the new regulation, lights at STEINEL are defined as surrounding products.

The new Energy Label Regulation: Rescaled.

With the introduction of the new Energy Label Regulation 2019/2015 (Energy Labelling Regulation), all light sources will be listed in the EPREL database and provided with a new EU energy label from 01.09.2021. The new energy label contains a new scaling from A to G.

Rescaling from A to G

The new legal requirements lead to a tightening of the energy class limits and ultimately to a new classification of the devices in the energy efficiency classes A to G. Due to the new scale and the associated requirements for economy, there is a negative shift in the energy efficiency class for almost all products.

Important:
The energy efficiency of the product does not deteriorate, it is only represented in a new scale. For example, a product that was previously classified in energy efficiency class A++ is now in class E. The rescaling ensures better comparability.

Areas of application

Till now, the regulations referred to lamps, LED modules and luminaires. With the new regulation, the areas of application have been redefined. The regulations now refer exclusively to light sources and separate operating devices. Light sources include lamps, LED modules and luminaires where the light source cannot be removed without causing damage. Luminaires where this is the case, on the other hand, are considered "surrounding products." These do not have to be provided with an energy label.

Why don't all products have an energy label?
Spotlights are defined as light sources at STEINEL. That is why all spotlights receive the new energy label and information beyond the EU standard. According to the new regulation, lights at STEINEL are defined as surrounding products and therefore do not have an energy label. STEINEL provides information 100% transparently, and far beyond the legal requirements.

We take a step further

With the new directive, the European Union is aiming to further reduce energy consumption and provide a better overview by rescaling. At STEINEL, we welcome the European Union's changes and are going one step further: with the customer in focus, we have added important information to our packaging and product details page to ensure greater transparency and better comparability.

We inform you about:

  •     the technical values for the overall product
  •     the technical values for the LED system
  •     the advantages of STEINEL spotlights and lights
  •     the interchangeability of light sources and operating devices

Plastic free packaging

In the meantime, 70% of our product packaging is plastic-free. We have replaced styrofoam and foam padding parts with paper security systems. Accessories and assembly materials are in paper bags made from recycled paper - saving us more than 2 million plastic bags per year.
