Solar lights - Lighting sustainably with the power of the sun

The sun - one of the most powerful and cleanest energy sources in the world. Not only is its energy free and available in virtually inexhaustible quantities, but it is also delivered to all of us free of charge, right to our doorsteps. So using solar energy to generate electricity for lighting around the house and garden is an economical and environmentally conscious decision. STEINEL has combined modern solar technology with an economical LED lighting system to create the world's most efficient solar lights: XSolar. These high-end lights stand for energy efficiency at the highest level - and in timelessly elegant designs that enhance any outdoor area.

Automatic light at dusk or motion

Solar lights make you completely independent of the power grid in the lighting of outdoor areas. The lights provide light without any problems even in places where there is no power supply. The installation is accordingly simple and quick, without the need to lay cables and electrical connections. Solar lights save the entire electricity costs for lighting - and this saved energy not only benefits the wallet, but also the environment. STEINEL's solar lights are available either with an infrared sensor that automatically switches the light on when movement is detected or with a twilight switch that automatically starts the permanent lighting when darkness falls.

Solar lights - FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Is it called solar lamp or solar light?

The terms lamp and luminaire are often used like synonyms in everyday life, but they do not mean the same thing at all. Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a "solar lamp," because lamp refers exclusively to the illuminant used in a luminaire, such as the energy-saving lamp. Even the good old "light bulb" is actually correctly called incandescent lamp. The lamp is therefore the pure light source itself.

The term luminaire, on the other hand, refers to the entire construction around this light source. This consists of various elements such as base, socket, cable, reflector and shade or glass cover. The actual lamp, i.e. the illuminant such as an incandescent lamp or LED lamp, is fixed in the socket. Accordingly, there can be no such thing as a "solar lamp" because the solar technology is part of the luminaire and not the lamp. How does a solar light work?
Each solar light has a solar cell consisting of processed silicon. STEINEL solar lights feature the monocrystalline solar panel, which is highly efficient compared to polycrystalline and amorphous solar panels and can convert solar energy even when it is cloudy.
In the cell, the supply of light and heat (solar energy) releases positive and negative charge carriers, generating electric current (photovoltaics) that, in the case of STEINEL solar lights, charges a lithium-ferrum battery. In some products, this has a lighting reserve of up to 60 days at 20 switching operations per night, 2500 mAh capacity and is temperature-resistant from -20 to +40 degrees.
The battery feeds the STEINEL LED system from the converted solar energy, which can illuminate an area of up to 30sqm with 150 lumens at 1.2W. The highest efficiency is 124 lm/W.
STEINEL solar lights also feature a powerful infrared sensor that switches light only when it's really needed. The 140-degree sensor with Fresnel lens integrates perfectly into the design.
To make the solar lights even more efficient, STEINEL has built software into the light that sets up a permanent automatic demand analysis and takes care of reserve control.

Why LED solar lights?

In XSolar lights from STEINEL, every single component contributes to the solar lights' high-level efficiency. State-of-the-art solar technology lays the foundation with a monocrystalline solar panel that is significantly more efficient than polycrystalline or amorphous solar panels, enabling charging even on cloudy days.

Solar technology converts solar energy into electrical energy, which in principle can be used to power any type of light source. However, since solar cells deliver relatively little electricity, STEINEL decided to combine them with the company's own LED system. LEDs already consume less power in principle than conventional light sources, and in the case of the STEINEL LED system, unparalleled energy efficiency has been achieved with a luminous efficiency of 124 lm/W. In conjunction with intelligent control of the solar lights via patented STEINEL software, the LED technology ensures that the energy generated is used to optimum effect. A lithium-ferrum battery also provides up to 60 days of lighting reserve.

If the light is equipped with an automatic twilight function, the light switches on as soon as it gets dark. The solar lights are even more economical with energy if the light is controlled by sensor technology. Because in this case, light is only switched on when it is really needed, namely when someone is in the vicinity of the light. Some solar lights equipped with a motion sensor also offer a basic light option with reduced continuous lighting and full light when activated.

How bright are solar lights?

The brightness of solar lights depends on the illuminant. Solar lights with the STEINEL LED system achieve 150 lumens at 1.2W, with the highest efficiency being 124lm/W.

How long do solar lights burn?

With their high-quality rechargeable batteries and, in particular, the combination of twilight sensors, motion detectors and LED bulbs, solar lights from STEINEL can achieve a lighting reserve of up to 60 days with 20 switching operations per night. Thanks to their weather resistance, they are guaranteed to work, come wind or weather.

How long do solar lights take to light up?

Before using the solar light for the first time, the battery is completely discharged. To prevent permanently minimized battery performance, the battery must be fully charged before the first use. In principle, solar lights can light up after the first few minutes of converting solar energy, but only for a very short time. The solar lamp should charge all day so that it has enough energy to shine at night.

Why do solar lights need batteries?

The batteries of a solar light store the energy generated during the day. At night, the battery then feeds the light with this energy.

How to charge solar lights?

Solar lights do not need manual charging. The electric current generated by solar energy is stored in a lithium-ferrum battery during the day, so that it can power the lamp at night when it is in motion. Some lights can be charged in advance via a mini-USB cable.

Why do solar lights only glow in the dark?

Solar lights can shine at any time of day, just like other lights. However, the light is only of use to the consumer from a certain level of daylight. Thanks to integrated twilight sensors, solar lights from STEINEL start to shine when they are really needed. Above all, solar lights need the time of day so that there is enough electrical energy for the night.

Can you leave solar lights outside in winter?

Solar lights from STEINEL provide reliable light in all weathers. In summer as well as in winter. So you can leave your solar light from STEINEL outside in winter without worrying.

How to clean solar lights?

The solar light and the solar panel are best cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild cleaner. However, the compatibility of the cleaner with the surface should be checked beforehand to prevent possible damage.

How to dispose solar lights?

Solar lights must not be disposed of with general household and residual waste, as they contain electronic components and rechargeable batteries. Since the consumer is legally obligated to dispose of these parts properly, there are collection points at the municipal level or they can be returned to the dealer.

How good are solar lights?

The combination of monocrystalline solar panel, STEINEL LED system, infrared sensor, lithium-ferrum battery and intelligent control is what makes STEINEL solar lights in particular highly efficient and so successful.

Solar energy is free and virtually inexhaustible, which means a great deal of energy can be saved, which is of great importance to both people and the environment.

The solar panel made of monocrystalline silicon oxide has the highest efficiency of all silicon processing. Moreover, silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust.

Due to the fact that solar cells provide relatively little power, the combination with LED lamps is optimal, because they are much more energy efficient with higher light output.

In many cases, the solar light is combined with a twilight switch, which turns on the light as soon as it gets dark. However, if the solar light has a sensor, light is also only switched on when it is really needed.

So for the consumer, the solar light offers a lot of convenience - on and off are switched automatically, you do not have a complex installation by cables and power laying, and the setting is easy to do.
