Climate change in the classroom.

The idea
A good indoor climate doesn't produce any Einsteins. But it's a relatively good start.

Sit, not good enough! Often, the quality of air in classrooms is anything but top class. No wonder. Frequently, as many as 30 students plus a teacher sit in one room for hours on end. Learning, laughing, yawning, sneezing, breathing. Sometimes letting fresh air in, but in most cases not often or long enough. The level of CO₂ rises, oxygen content and concentration fall. What can be done about chronically poor air in the classroom?

Building Intelligence sensors from STEINEL respond sensitively to poor air and give students and teachers a healthier and better learning environment.

The project

  • An elevated CO2 concentration in room air increases the breathing frequency and significantly slows down the ability to think.
  • With windows opened only part of the way it takes around 60 minutes before spent room air is completely replaced.
  • Frequently letting in fresh air to providing a good indoor climate can increase student performance by up to 15%.

Presence is the key to building automation. Building functions, such as heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, can be controlled to provide energy efficiency. When rooms are not being used, the systems can be turned down to save energy.

Good lighting fosters learning. Classrooms with a lot of daylight, for example, make pupils up to 26% faster in reading tests. Intelligent lighting control adjusts lighting to the time day and, thanks to HCL, creates conditions similar to daylight for a higher level of concentration and performance.

Recent studies show how important it is to keep the concentration of CO2 as low as possible in classroom air. Fresh air and a limit below 1000 ppm significantly improves learning results and student health.

Intelligent sensor technology saves lots of energy. As well as that of students and teachers.

One in every two schools in Germany works with lighting technology that is over 25 years old. But converting it to modern LED technology is only the first step. Intelligent lighting control using presence detectors can also save a lot of money – and optimise the atmosphere for learning in. Because not only good air, but also good lighting is essential for healthy learning. For instance, a constant lighting control system that includes the component of daylight always dims the level of light in the way required for optimising the ability to learn.

LiveLink. Light management, revolutionarily simple.

What used to be very complex and time-consuming can now be configured with LiveLink in just a few minutes without any specialist knowledge or programming experience. Operation is simple and intuitive via tablet or smartphone. The LiveLink app provides step-by-step guidance through the installation process. Common application scenarios, such as in an office or classroom, are stored as so-called Use Cases and make planning particularly simple. Special, highly sensitive sensors from STEINEL control the light precisely depending on room use and the amount of daylight present.

Sports hall

Ceilings in sports halls are often 8 – 10 m high. Reliably detecting movement here is no mean feat. To do this, STEINEL has created compelling solutions.

It is specialised in identifying movement in long narrow school corridors. Even installed in a concealed position, the Hallway corridor sensor can be adjusted via Bluetooth by app.

Our sensors deliver reliable measurement readings on all aspects of temperature, humidity etc., helping to create the best possible environment for learning in. Optical sensors provide assistance in identifying the extent to which rooms and spaces are utilised.
