Intelligent Water Management

Sensors in washbasin taps, toilets and showers are revolutionising everyday life by enabling touch-free operation and precise control. In addition to the advantages of sensor technology intelligence in devices, the advantages of IoT systems are now being added.

The use of IoT solutions in the sanitation sector leads to greater efficiency, cost savings, improved user experience, increased safety and hygiene, better resource management and optimised customer service.

IoT system solutions

Thanks to IoT, water management is becoming easier and smarter. Customers access their data via intuitive dashboards. Technicians respond quickly and efficiently through remote diagnostics and maintenance. Automated notifications and proactive maintenance plans improve system reliability.

There are basically two options for implementing an IoT system solution. The decision in favour of one option or the other is based on various factors, including security requirements, data availability, response times and infrastructure on site:

✓ IoT system solution with cloud connection
✓ IoT system solution without cloud connection

STEINEL Solutions has already implemented several solutions for companies in the sanitary sector. The possible applications are as diverse as the technologies themselves and the technical demands on IoT projects are just as extensive.

As a development partner and point of contact for hardware, software and networking, we understand the requirements for an IoT system solution. Thanks to our extensive expertise in the integration of sensor and communication technologies in building management, we advise our customers and coordinate the interdisciplinary implementation.

IoT system solution with cloud connection

Solution

The solution includes tiny gateways, a smartphone app for Android and iOS for easy configuration, and a web/client-based application for managing and evaluating the devices.

An electronic module expands the functions of the sanitary fittings with digital inputs and outputs, records additional measurement data and transmits it to the cloud via a central gateway. This data, which is relevant for optimising maintenance and monitoring drinking water installations (e.g. according to DIN 1988-200), enables customised, standard-compliant flushing and action plans that are monitored in real time in the software.

The complete end-to-end development guarantees seamless implementation and optimised operations.

Technology decision

The choice of a Thread wireless mesh network for data transmission in this project ensures reliable, scalable and energy-efficient communication between devices, while cloud integration enables flexible, centralised management and real-time evaluation.

IoT system solution without cloud connection

Solution

The network is based on an energy-efficient mesh system that allows for easy installation and flexible expansion across multiple floors and rooms.

All nodes are battery-powered, which means that the system does not require an external power supply. The smartphone app is used to configure, monitor and manage the devices and enables firmware updates directly over the network.

The combination of secure data transmission, energy-efficient networking and easy scalability makes the solution ideal for applications with decentralised installations.

Technology decision

The decision as to which network technology is used in the IoT system solution is based on requirements for scalability, security, energy consumption, interoperability and costs. The difference often lies in the application and infrastructure. STEINEL Solutions is on hand to advise on the technology decision.
