Protecting our livelihood

Through our economic activities and the achievement of our corporate goals, we leave traces on our planet. To ensure that these are as small as possible, we orient our production towards sustainability in order to protect the basis of life for all of us in the best possible way. Our products and services should be manufactured in a way that conserves resources and leaves behind as few pollutants as possible. This is how we secure the basis of life for the future. However, this way of thinking and acting does not only refer to the production process, but already starts with the development and design of our products. A sustainable product life cycle is our benchmark.

This is how we live sustainability at STEINEL

2. with and through our products

We focus on durability and energy efficiency in our products. Already during development, we pay attention to sustainable design in order to avoid short product life cycles and thus unnecessary electrical waste. Since 1986, we have been developing and producing products with motion detectors so that light is only switched on when it is really needed. With the intelligent sensor technology of our luminaires and sensors, enormous CO2 and energy savings can be demonstrably achieved.

1. in our organisation & the production sites

For us, avoiding emissions is more important than offsetting them, especially in the manufacture of our products. Through targeted measures in our production facilities and a correspondingly sustainable orientation of our organisational processes, we are committed to greater sustainability on a daily basis.

-41%

Reduction of CO2 emissions
Thanks to targeted measures, we were able to reduce our CO2 emissions by a total of 41% across all plants in the period from 2017 - 2022 - and we are continuing!

7t

Reduction of paper consumption.
Instead of detailed operating instructions, our products come with a Quick Start Guide. This saves us 7 tons of paper every year.

-92%

Energy consumption
Thanks to intelligent luminaires and networking, we only need 8% of the energy previously used.

-10t

Plastic saving
By switching all irrelevant plastic and plastic content in our product packaging to paper, we have already been able to save 10 tonnes of plastic and plastic.

Sustainability in organisation and production

This is how we work for more sustainability in our company every day

We try to make all organisational and manufacturing processes sustainable. Our products are "made in Europe", and we ourselves have a deep vertical range of manufacture in our plants. For example, we assemble our printed circuit boards ourselves and have our own plastic injection moulding shop. This enables us to shorten logistics routes.

We base our environmental and energy management on existing international standards. We rely on a continuous improvement process to achieve the environmental goals we have defined. By means of an energy audit, we have independent third parties check where we stand and how we can further improve the energy efficiency of the company. The DIN standards that are a matter of course for us include:

  • Quality management according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015
  • Environmental management according to DIN EN ISO 14001:2015
  • Energy management according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018 (Steinel Mölkau)
  • Energy audit according to DIN 16247-1: 2012

41% less CO2 consumption since 2017

Responsible and sustainable action requires economical and efficient use of energy resources. The STEINEL environmental dashboard evaluates and analyses all consumption and the associated GHG emissions (Scope 1,2). Since the Steinel reference year 2017, sustainability measures have enabled consumption to be continuously reduced at all sites. The STEINEL environmental dashboard gives us the opportunity to further identify potential savings and sustainably reduce our emissions.

To calculate our greenhouse gases or CO2 emissions, we use the CO2 equivalents from the Federal Office of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the data from the Federal Environment Agency. To calculate the GHG emissions, the CO2 emissions are multiplied by a factor of 1.12.

First sensor light in the world

Steinel invented the sensor light in 1987. Before the world was concerned about climate change, resources and sustainability, we were developing products for the future. With the sensor-controlled light, the light is only switched on when it is needed. That's good for the environment and your wallet.

Introduction of energy audit

In order to officially seal our sustainability strategy, an annual energy audit in accordance with DIN 16247-1: 2012 has been carried out at our main plant in Herzebrock-Clarholz since 2012. We conscientiously implement the measures derived from this audit.

Environmentally friendly design

We pay attention to sustainable design right from the development stage of our products. To this end, we work with an environmental checklist, which we use to ensure that the design of our products complies with environmentally relevant standards and specifications.

ISO-14001 Certification

In 2014, all Steinel sites were certified according to the DIN EN ISO 14001 environmental management standard in addition to the DIN EN ISO 9001 quality management standard.

Amfori.jpg

BSCI Audit

Since 2017, our production sites in Romania and the Republic of Moldova have been certified by amfori BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) with top marks (A) in all areas, in particular to ensure compliance with social requirements.

German Sustainability Code

In 2021, we became one of the first companies in our industry to report in accordance with the German Sustainability Code (DNK). This is a cross-industry transparency standard for reporting on corporate sustainability performance.

Start of packaging changeover

We want to avoid the unnecessary use of plastics in our packaging and have changed all possible components. Our sales packaging consists of 99.23% paper, cardboard and carton.

Construction of photovoltaic system in Curtea

By installing a solar system, we cover 40% of our own electricity requirements at our Curtea de Arges plant (Romania) with solar power.  With this system, we generate around 574,000 kWh of emission-free electricity per year at our largest plant, which represents a saving of over 63 tonnes of CO2.

Start of switch to green electricity tariffs

In 2022, the electricity tariffs at the Herzebrock and Mölkau sites were switched to green electricity. This means that we obtain our electricity from up to 100% hydropower.

Green travel policy

We have set ourselves the task of making business trips greener. We pay attention to the means of transport we use for business trips and try to minimise the CO2 impact of our business trips as much as possible. We compensate for unavoidable CO2 emissions with sustainable projects. However, our approach here is to avoid rather than offset.

Sustainability in our products

Sustainable product development: Already during the development of our products, we pay attention to sustainable design. The electronics integrated in our products are matched to each other: for example, luminaires with fully integrated LEDs have a significantly longer service life compared to luminaires with replaceable light sources. Fully integrated LED systems can be better connected to heat sinks. This allows them to be operated at low temperatures, which ensures a longer service life of the LEDs and thus a lighting duration of 30,000 - 60,000 hours. This longevity saves resources and avoids electronic waste, as no components have to be disposed of. For us, that is sustainability.

Plastic free packaging

We have set a goal to deliver all our products in plastic-free packaging by 2022. Thus, all accessories are now in bags made from 100% recycled paper, instead of the conventional plastic bags. We are replacing the styrofoam used to date to secure the goods with precisely fitting molded fiber parts with the same degree of protection. The extensive operating instructions are exchanged for small clear Quickstarts, which require only 12.5% of the previously used amount of paper.

Further topics around sustainability

teaser_social_responsibility.jpg

Social Responsibility - Being strong together

We put people at the center. Whether as an employee, learner, manager or inventor. Our set of values is expressed in the STEINEL mission statement. This is our guiding principle for our actions and demonstrates our responsibility.

teaser_governance.jpg

Governance - Trust through openness

Responsible and sustainable corporate governance requires compliance with legal framework conditions. Compliance, transparency and evaluation by independent third parties are just as much a part of this as internal organizational structures. We are committed to this with value-oriented action.
