The new EU regulations.
Efficiency and sustainability in the service of climate protection.

Green light for a climate-friendly future. At the end of 2019, the member states of the European Union decided to reduce energy consumption by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. To achieve this goal, two new EU regulations govern the ecodesign (SLR) and energy labelling (ELR) of light sources.

The new Ecodesign Directive: a fresh approach to energy efficiency.

The introduction of the new Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2020 (Single Lighting Regulation) defined the requirements for light sources and separate control gears. From now on, a distinction will be made between light sources and surrounding products. New requirements for function and energy efficiency should help to conserve resources.

The new energy label ordinance: rescaled.

With the introduction of the new Energy Labelling Regulation 2019/2015, all light sources in the EPREL database will be listed and given a new EU energy label from 1 September 2021. The new energy label contains a new scale from A to G.

Rescaling from A to G

The new legal requirements have led to a tightening of the energy class limits and ultimately to a reclassification of the devices into the energy efficiency classes A to G. Due to the new scale and the associated requirements for economy, there has been a negative shift in the energy efficiency class for almost all products.

Important:
The energy efficiency of the product does not deteriorate, it is simply displayed on a new scale. A product that was previously in energy efficiency class A++, for example, is now in class E. The rescaling ensures better comparability.

areas of application

Until now, the regulations applied to lamps, LED modules and luminaires. With the new regulation, the areas of application have been redefined. The regulations now apply exclusively to light sources and separate control gear. Lamps, LED modules and luminaires for which the light source cannot be removed without being destroyed are counted as light sources. Luminaires for which this is the case, on the other hand, are considered "surrounding products". These do not have to be provided with an energy label.

Why don't all products have an energy label?
At STEINEL, spotlights are defined as the light source. This is why all spotlights have the new energy label and information that goes beyond the EU standard. According to the new regulation, lights are defined as a surrounding product at STEINEL and therefore do not have an energy label. STEINEL provides information that is 100% transparent and goes well beyond the legal requirements.

Which light source belongs to which product?

We go one step further

With the new guideline, the European Union aims to further reduce energy consumption and to provide a better overview through rescaling. We at STEINEL welcome the changes made by the European Union and are going one step further: with the customer in mind, we have added important information to our packaging and on the product details page to ensure greater transparency and better comparability.

We will inform you about:

  • the technical data for the overall product
  • the technical data for the LED system
  • the benefits of STEINEL spotlights and lights
  • the interchangeability of light sources and control gear

Plastic-free packaging

Meanwhile, 70% of our product packaging is plastic-free. We have replaced polystyrene and foam padding with paper packaging. Accessories and installation materials are packed in paper bags made from recycled paper – this saves us more than 2 million plastic bags a year.
