PIR sensors detect the infrared radiation emitted by warm objects such as people and use this to efficiently control lighting, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as building management systems. A key feature is the precise detection of people’s presence in a room, even with minimal movement. Rooms are automatically lit or heated as soon as people are detected. Compared with other technologies, such as ultrasound or high-frequency, PIR sensors specialise in thermal radiation and are therefore ideal for areas where accurate presence detection is crucial – such as in offices, meeting rooms or public buildings.
