Building intelligence for parking and transport
It works. Impressive results from the Heuried underground car park in Zurich.
The idea behind

Parking garages and underground parking facilities with demand-based lighting instead of unnecessary continuous lighting

Parking garages and underground parking facilities are typically open around the clock. Good lighting throughout all areas is essential for users’ sense of security and for safely maneuvering vehicles. However, if the lights are left on continuously when no vehicles or people are present, energy is wasted. Sensor-controlled lighting, combined with smart networking and lighting control, provides a solution.

As a pilot project, the parking deck of the Heuried underground parking garage was equipped with 240 STEINEL RS PRO Connect 5100 LED fixtures, which can be wirelessly networked. By investing in a solution featuring Connected Lighting fixtures, parking facility operators can implement demand-based lighting control that prevents lights from staying on unnecessarily, guides users through the parking garage, and thereby reduces energy costs while enhancing comfort and a sense of security.

92% lower energy costs. Even we were amazed.

The energy efficiency of LED sensor lighting can be significantly improved through ‘light intelligence’. The parking deck of the underground car park was fitted with 240 STEINEL RS PRO Connect 5100 LED luminaires, each with a power rating of 30 watts and capable of wireless networking, with every second luminaire being a slave unit. The luminaires were divided into four lighting groups and controlled intelligently. The creation of lighting groups, the switching to a 10 per cent basic lighting mode after one minute of inactivity, and the complete switch-off after 15 minutes have resulted in a measurable energy saving of 92 per cent compared with the old lighting system.

The lighting guides users as they make their way through the underground car park. Lights are only switched on where they are actually needed. This prevents lights from being left on unnecessarily and ensures that no energy is wasted.

"We were sure that we would save a lot of energy by installing the latest generation of luminaires. We were impressed to see that networking and intelligently controlling the luminaires increased the energy savings many times over."

RS PRO 5100 SC

Connected via Bluetooth, the RS PRO 5100 SC LED sensor batten luminaire is easily and conveniently adjusted and operated using an app.

RS PRO 5100 C

On the car park level, every second luminaire is one without a motion sensor, i.e. an RS PRO 5100 C. When connected to the master luminaire, both react as one complete luminaire. This helps to reduce investment costs.

Full operation below 10

Installation of the RS PRO Connect 5100 LED has significantly improved the illumination on the car park level. This makes the time users spend here much more pleasant. At the same time, a real measurement showed that electricity consumption could be reduced to 1.1 kWh/m². This is well below the current limit of 2.2 kWh/m². The measurement also showed that the lighting is only at full power 9% of the time and in a dimmed state 45.4% of the time. The lighting is in standby mode 45.6% of the time.

94MWh

The energy consumption of the entire underground car park can be reduced by an estimated 94.3 MWh per year.

220lux

The new lighting solution almost doubled the illumination from 120 to 220 lux on average.

92%

The networked, intelligent lighting solution has made it possible to save a huge amount of energy.

Easy networking and operation via app

Forming lighting groups is useful for illuminating a large area such as the parking level of an underground car park. With the RS PRO Connect 5100 LED, no additional cables need to be laid for this purpose. The lights can be easily connected via Bluetooth using the intuitive STEINEL app. A group master must be specified for each of these lighting groups in the app. All the lights in a group then operate in the same way as the group master is configured. Other light functions such as the neighbour function, lighting parameters such as twilight setting, basic light, main light and time settings can also be easily set using the app. Practical: All settings are made from the ground. No ladder is required.

Parque Europa car park – Leiria, Portugal

Lead-time lighting and STEINEL’s swarm intelligence ensure that lighting in Parque Europa in Leiria, Portugal, is switched on and off as required. The three-storey car park has been fitted with the RS PRO 5100 SC, the RS PRO R10 SC and products from the XLED PRO ONE series, which provide stairwells and parking areas with lighting tailored to their needs.
