Busy operations, day in and day out – that is part of everyday life at Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss Airport. In the cargo area in particular, where there are numerous obstacles and potential hazards, good visibility and safety are essential. Keeping the lighting on continuously even when areas are not in use, however, leads to unnecessarily high energy consumption and corresponding electricity costs. For this reason, Flughafen München GmbH opted for an intelligent, sensor-based solution from STEINEL. The high quality of light, the dense sensor network and the Bluetooth connectivity of the STEINEL 5100 series make a real difference in the cargo area. A total of 1,300 luminaires with five-core through-wiring and around 200 additional sensors for high mounting heights were installed. According to calculations by Flughafen München GmbH, the new system saves around 230 tonnes of CO₂ per year compared with the previous lighting system. Further reasons for choosing the STEINEL linear luminaire included the simple installation, the continued use of the existing wiring and drill holes, and the ability to configure the system via app.

The special feature of this reference project is the installation of the 5100 series at a height of 6 metres. The IR Quattro HD 2 COM 1 presence detector was used to expand the actual detection area with a maximum mounting height of 4 metres and to ensure that lighting is provided when it is needed. This expands the detection area and guarantees lighting across the entire surface.
The new Bluetooth Mesh technology opens up a whole new range of networking possibilities. The Bluetooth technology we use complies with the Bluetooth SIG standard.
The CO2 savings correspond to the absorption capacity of 18,400 trees.

The RS PRO 5100 SC enables significantly lower energy consumption compared with conventional T5 lighting. In combination with demand-based lighting control, electricity costs can also be reduced. The actual savings potential depends on the specific usage conditions and the existing lighting situation.
Especially in view of the ban on T5 lamps since September 2023, it is important to consider upgrading existing lighting systems. Connected Lighting makes it possible to combine the retrofit with demand-based lighting control and thereby unlock additional energy-saving potential.
