Cargo freight area, Munich Airport
The idea behind

Cargo freight area, Munich Airport

Busy operations, day in, day out – that’s everyday life at Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss Airport. Visibility and safety are crucial, particularly in the vicinity of the cargo area, where there are many obstacles and potential hazards. In terms of energy costs and environmental impact, leaving lights on continuously – even when areas are not in use – is not a viable solution, which is why Flughafen München GmbH opted for STEINEL’s intelligent, sensor-based solution. The high light quality, the dense sensor network and the Bluetooth connectivity of the STEINEL 5100 series make all the difference in the cargo area. A total of 1,300 5-wire through-wired luminaires and approximately 200 additional sensors for high ceilings were installed. According to the airport’s own calculations, this system saves 230 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Further reasons why Munich Airport opted for the STEINEL linear luminaire include the ease of installation, the ability to reuse existing cabling and existing drill holes, and the option to configure the system via an app.

Special situation, special solution

The special feature of this reference project is the installation of the 5100 series at a height of 6 metres. The IR Quattro HD 2 COM 1 presence detector was used to expand the actual detection area with a maximum mounting height of 4 metres and to ensure that lighting is provided when it is needed. This expands the detection area and guarantees lighting across the entire surface.

potential savings

With the RS PRO 5100 SC, a huge amount of CO2 can be saved compared to a T5 light source, which in turn leads to cost savings of over €100 per light fitting.

Particularly in view of the ban on T5 lamps from September 2023, everyone should be looking into the issue of conversion. Connected Lighting is the solution for not only converting, but also maximising savings potential.
