Stuttgart City Library

Intelligent light for intelligent minds. On 24 October 2011, the new building of the municipal library was opened as a cultural centre at Mailänder Platz in the new European Quarter in Stuttgart. When planning the new Stuttgart City Library, the vision of Korean architect Eun Young Yi was to create a symbol for a new social centre that combines education and a thirst for knowledge with a characteristic, inspiring element. The thermal façade with a double-shell building envelope made of concrete and glass is fascinating and innovative. The clear design concept is structured in a simple and elegant cube. The innovative architecture of the blue monolith should also be expressed through the use of innovative technology. STEINEL products ensured a harmonious balance between the perfect use of natural light and the energy-efficient use of artificial light.

Bright, white interior of the public library in Stuttgart

"The light in the library is always the same, regardless of whether it is sunny outside or already evening. As a visitor, I find this very pleasant, because the atmosphere in here is always the same, bright and friendly."

Marc Lorch, library user

central building automation

When the library was being built, the decision was taken to use a KNX-based building automation system to provide perfect control of all important building functions, such as the lighting. KNX sensors from STEINEL can be quickly and easily integrated into the building's entire technology system. The HF 360 KNX from STEINEL's proven Presence Control PRO series was chosen to detect movement in the library. It not only minimises energy consumption, but also ensures a perfect balance between natural and artificial light.

Planning with RELUX

The building's planners were supported by RELUX software to optimise the number and positioning of the presence detectors. RELUX software can be used to plan all STEINEL presence detectors. The product data for all sensors is stored in this software. With just a few clicks of the mouse, the professional user receives a perfect list of his sensors and can even display the detection zone of each sensor in RELUX.

360-degree overview

The HF 360 is particularly slim because, thanks to HF technology, it works without a lens. Installed on the ceiling, it detects all movements in a full circle from 1 to 8 metres. This can be set exactly as required. Another special feature of HF technology: no matter how you approach the sensor, the quality of the detection is always equally good. Unlike PIR technology, there is no difference between tangential and radial detection.

Penetrating insight

High-frequency waves have the advantage of being able to penetrate glass room elements or even stud walls. This means that the HF 360 can be installed invisibly behind suspended ceilings without compromising detection quality. Visitors to the Stuttgart City Library cannot see the sensors, but they ensure pleasant workplace lighting.
