Connected Lighting solution

92% energy savings in the car park of the Westmorland Shopping Centre

The idea behind

Westmorland Shopping Centre car park

Multi-storey and underground car parks are often in operation for long periods of time, which is why effective lighting is essential – not only for safety and comfort, but also in terms of energy efficiency in a world where sustainability is indispensable.

In Kendal's 7-storey car park, the original system comprised 544 luminaires in six outdated lighting types. The RS PRO 5100 SC was chosen for STEINEL's Connected Lighting solution to provide intelligent lighting control. Bluetooth Mesh technology enables wireless adjustment and commissioning with the STEINEL app. Special features such as the neighbouring group function and the basic lighting option ensure an immediate reduction in energy consumption and costs. This is not just a technical upgrade, but a strategic leap towards a sustainable, intelligent infrastructure.

Efficient lighting solutions for modern requirements

The 754 RS PRO 5100 SC luminaires stand for reliable and future-oriented lighting technology. With a high luminous efficacy of 137 lm/watt, they offer maximum energy efficiency. Lighting is only provided when needed and precisely where it is really needed – for optimum illumination with minimum energy consumption.

Thanks to their fully adjustable light output, the luminaires can be flexibly adapted to any application situation.

The 754 luminaires were installed on both the parking decks and in the stairwells. Bluetooth Mesh networking allows the luminaires to communicate with each other and create luminaire groups. When a person moves from the parking deck to the stairwells, the last luminaire group on the parking deck switches on the first luminaire group in the stairwell. This avoids dark corners and angles and maximises user comfort. At the same time, lights that are not needed remain off or in basic lighting mode, drastically reducing energy consumption.

The fact that they only require a single supply to power the light, sensor and emergency function, with connections to other lights being via Bluetooth, ensured a minimal amount of wiring and containment was required, speeding up the installation.

Light intelligence instead of permanent lighting

The Connected Lighting System offers exceptional flexibility.

The STEINEL Connect app is the heart of Connected Lighting. It allows you to intuitively commission, configure and network lights, as well as parameterise entire lighting groups and complete projects.

All settings can be easily adapted to the environment and current customer requirements – including the neighbour function (swarm function), twilight threshold, basic and main light intensity, and time parameters.

The result is a fully customisable, intelligent lighting system that is easy to set up and optimise in terms of performance, energy savings and sustainability.

The grouping of luminaires is crucial for efficient lighting of large areas such as multi-storey and underground car parks. The luminaires in this car park were grouped in threes. Each group was connected to an adjacent group of three luminaires. When the immediate luminaire group detects movement, these luminaires switch on at 100% brightness, while the connected neighbouring groups switch on at 10% brightness. Each group follows the specifications of a designated master luminaire, which is configured directly via the STEINEL app.

When the sensor lights detect movement, the lights in the group switch to 100% illumination. If no further movement is detected, the lights remain at 100% for the defined period of one minute.

If no new movement is detected during the follow-up time, the lights switch to 10% basic lighting. This saves energy and at the same time prevents users from being left standing in the dark unintentionally.

If no movement is detected during the follow-up time in the basic light, the lights switch off. Only when movement is detected again do the lights switch back to 100%.

Maximum flexibility

The STEINEL Connect app with the set light groups

In this car park, the two lowest floors are reserved as additional parking spaces for exclusive use during peak times. The car park operators wanted to be able to deactivate the sensors on these levels to prevent their use – without interrupting the emergency lighting, which would otherwise take time to recharge.

This is easily possible with the STEINEL Connect app. Users can selectively deactivate sensors in selected lighting groups at specific times, while the emergency lighting continues to operate without interruption.
