Parking & transport
It works. Impressive results in the Heuried underground car park in Zurich.
The idea behind
Car parks and underground car parks that are virtually carbon neutral and at the same time increase safety and comfort.

Car parks and underground car parks are usually open 24/7. Good illumination of all surfaces is important for users' sense of personal safety and for safely manoeuvring vehicles. However, if the light is permanently switched on here, valuable energy is wasted. Sensor-switched lighting in combination with intelligent networking and light switching provides a remedy.

As a pilot project, the car park at Heuried underground car park was equipped with 240 wirelessly networkable RS PRO Connect 5100 LEDs from STEINEL. By investing in a modern, energy-efficient lighting solution, car park operators have the opportunity for a high return on investment. At the same time, users enjoy more comfort and safety, which makes their stay in the underground car park more pleasant.

92% lower energy costs. Even we were amazed.

The energy efficiency of LED sensor lighting can be significantly increased by "light intelligence". The car park deck of the underground garage was equipped with 240 wirelessly networkable RS PRO Connect 5100 LED lights from STEINEL with an output of 33 watts, with every second light being a slave version. The lights were divided into four lighting groups and intelligently controlled. Forming lighting groups, switching to a 10% background lighting mode after 1 minute in the event of absence and switching off completely after 15 minutes has led to a measurable energy saving of 92%.

The light accompanies the user on their way through the underground car park. The light is only switched on where it is actually needed. This ensures that no energy is wasted.

"We were sure that we would save a lot of energy by installing the latest generation of luminaires. We were impressed by the fact that networking and intelligently controlling the luminaires increases energy savings many times over."

RS PRO 5100 C

On the car park level, every second luminaire is one without a motion sensor, i.e. an RS PRO 5100 C. When connected to the master luminaire, both react as one complete luminaire. This helps to reduce investment costs.

RS PRO 5100 SC

Connected via Bluetooth, the RS PRO 5100 SC LED sensor batten luminaire is easily and conveniently adjusted and operated using an app.

Full operation under 10 per cent

Installation of the RS PRO Connect 5100 LED has significantly improved lighting on the car park level. This makes the user experience much more pleasant. At the same time, measurements in practice have shown that electricity consumption has been reduced to 1.1 kWh/m², which is well below the current limit of 2.2 kWh/m². The measurements also showed that the lighting is only at full power 9% of the time and at a dimmed level 45.4% of the time. The lighting is in standby mode 45.6% of the time.

94MWh

The energy consumption of the entire underground car park is expected to be reduced by 94.3 MWh per year.

220lux

With the new lighting solution, the lighting level has almost doubled on average from 120 to 220 lux.

92%

The networked, intelligent lighting solution has resulted in drastic energy savings.

Easy networking and operation via app

To light an area as extensive as the parking level of an underground car park, it makes sense to form groups of lights. With the RS PRO Connect 5100 LED, no additional cables need to be laid for this purpose. The lights are simply connected to each other via Bluetooth using the intuitive STEINEL app. For each of these light groups, it is necessary to define a group master in the app. All the lights in a group then work the way the group master is configured. Other light functions, such as the neighbourhood function, as well as light parameters such as twilight setting, basic light level, main light and time settings can also be easily selected via the app. Practical: All light functions and settings are conveniently selected from the ground using the app. No ladder is required.
